In Indonesia, between 9,000 and 10,000 newborn babies are born with cleft lip and palate. The condition affects the social life and mental well-being of people born with it.

Under the banner of its flagship product Kuku Bima, PT Industri Jamu Dan Farmasi Sido Muncul, Tbk (Sido Muncul) held another round of free cleft lip surgery for 50 patients in Surabaya, East Java with a goal of reducing the number of cleft lip cases in Indonesia.

Sido Muncul Director Irwan Hidayat symbolically handed over Rp325 million to Deasy Larasati, Country Manager and Program Director of Smile Train Indonesia through a virtual ceremony held in House of Jamu Building in Jakarta.

Irwan Hidayat expressed his concern for parents of children with cleft lips, which led to the Company offering surgeries to help improve their wellbeing.

"We started providing cleft lip surgeries only recently. We started in Kupang six years ago and so far, have assisted 624 patients," said Irwan in the Sido Muncul office, House of Jamu Building in Jakarta, on Friday (16/2/2024).

According to Irwan, helping those is a source of energy and presents an opportunity for the privileged to support their community.

"I’m truly concerned. I cannot imagine how parents feel when their child is born with a cleft lip; it must feel like their world is falling apart. Low-income families must find it much more daunting. That’s why surgeries like those from PHC Hospital and Smile Train Indonesia are such a remarkable blessing," he added.

"This initiative is Sido Muncul's commitment to contribute towards healthcare in Indonesia. Since the number of cleft lip cases is still high, we hope that the free surgery would encourage more people to spread the word and take similar action. The more action is made, the more lives we can help improve." Irwan added.
